It’s a New Day!

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Wow, so much has changed since I began teaching my children at home, back in the dark ages, or so it seems some days.  When we began homeschooling there were few companies that wrote or published curriculum geared toward the unique needs of educating at home.  Now, not only are there several companies on board and promoting materials for homeschool use, but there are also online programs being created for this vast community.  It’s a new day for home education!

K5 Learning is an outstanding, online reading and math enrichment program!

Click the K5 graphic above for Sample Lessons

Geared for Kindergarten through Grade 5, it is a student paced, individualized learning program, based on skill level, not grade level.  Even in light of other online programs we have used, my children agreed that K5 Learning is consistently challenging, but not frustratingly impossible.  I like it because it has repeated spoken instructions allowing even young students to work independently.

There are 1,500 reading tutorials with more than 3,000 activities, and over 1,200 math lessons and activities.  These are not random.  They are sequenced lessons that prompt continued mastery of the subject.  Each session is a 5-10 minute tutorial, then practice, and quiz over new material.

Click graphic above for Math details

K5 Math is comprehensive.  It covers – Numbers & Operations, Geometry, Measurement, Algebra, and Data Analysis.  The Math Facts encourage “instant recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables.  Unlike computerized drill programs, K5 Math Facts does not generate questions randomly.  It records every response a child makes, continually analyses what facts your child has mastered or need further practice at, and generates questions based on that child’s needs.  This makes K5 Math Facts far more efficient at teaching math facts than a typical drill program.”

Click Math Facts graphic above to view demo

The Reading Enrichment encompasses Reading Curriculum & Comprehension, Phonics and Phonemic Awareness, Sight Words, Vocabulary, and Spelling.  K5 Spelling has a 150,00 word database, and “is far beyond your typical online spelling program.”

Additionally, K5 Learning keeps parent’s up-to-date with regular student progress reports.

Subscription rate:

per year – 1st child $199

additional child $129

per month – 1st child $25

additional child $15

K5 offers a 14-day FREE TRIAL that includes a reading assessment and a math assessment.

Eggsceptional Reading!

Posted by: | Comments (2)

“The more you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ~ Dr. Seuss

In our house we read.  I read to gain knowledge and for personal enjoyment.  As a parent, I read to my children.  My older children read for themselves but they are also encouraged, from a young age, to read to their younger siblings. I read to the family, chapters at a time, as a series, instead of watching TV.  The younger children see us with books, they hear stories of adventure, courage, excitement, and mishap.  They can sit in their bedroom and be in Africa on a safari, at the same time, or sit in the living room, together, and travel back in time to a Little House on the PrairieAll of this cultivates a desire in the young ones to want to read on their own.

Reading Eggs is an eggsceptional  interactive, online reading program.

This program is developed by teachers, educational writers, animators, and web designers.  It is built on a core curriculum of skills, using a sequential series of lessons.  The focus of Reading Eggs is for children ages 4-7, with the addition of Eggspress geared for 7-13 years old.  There are over 100 lessons available now, plus they continue to grow.  The brand new Storylands opened March 2, 2012, with the first 20 lessons of Clinker Castle!  My son agrees this is a big deal!

My youngest daughter loves Reading Eggs!

Map of lessons and eggs waiting to be hatched.

Her personalized, eggsploring avatar walks through Reading Eggs World as she works her way through lessons and quizzes.  Upon completion of a set of lessons, she is rewarded.  Special eggs hatch and reveal a new critter that is added to the zoo.  The program is student-paced.  If there is any difficulty understanding or retaining a lesson it can be repeated as many times as necessary, with no penalty or negative judgement.

Lesson activity – put the words in the correct order to form a sentence.

Songs, games, educational activities, and golden egg rewards, make for eggstra FUN!

Game time!

There is an Assessment Test available for each child.  40 questions, that will determine the best place to start your student.  My son is happy being an Eggpress eggsplorer!

An Assessment Test question

He says the animation is eggscellent!  The lessons are fun, but he is still challenged and he’s learning!  There are many stories of fact and fiction that keep his attention.  Just like his sister, he enjoys furnishing a house for his avatar, shopping, and generally playing in the Reading Eggs World.

An Eggspress comprehension test question.

I like the parent’s reports that I receive, keeping me up to date on their progress and accomplishments!  I eggspect to use Reading Eggs for years, especially because they eggspect to continue to expand and improve.

~

Don’t just take my word for it.  Follow the links I’ve provided throughout this post and investigate their website.  You can also read other reviews by my crew mates, when you click the TOS graphic below.

What Will Your Child Believe?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

From the time our children are born we teach them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made.  They grow knowing it, because they hear it often.  When they’re a little older, they’re often amazed the first time we share The Scripture, from Psalm 139:13-16, with them, because they realize it’s not just momma and daddy, being momma & daddy and saying they are wonderful and unique, God said it.

“For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.”

The Bible is our touchstone.  It is the measure by which the validity or merit of something can be evaluated.  We view knowledge through The Bible.  We believe it is the ultimate authority.  We desire to live by faith in Christ Jesus and anchor our world-view in Him.

As our children become preteens and teenagers we challenge them to apply themselves to know why they believe what they believe.  Yes, we want them to know The Truth, and to believe it, but it will not hold them fast if they don’t own it themselves.  If you don’t know why you are waiting to have sex until after you’re married, inevitably you’ll find yourself in a situation of compromise.  If you don’t know why you think a baby is a baby before it’s earthside, abortion is a possibility.  If you don’t know why you believe in Jesus Christ as The Way, The Truth, and The Life, someone may come along and give you a good enough reason to think He isn’t.

What will my children believe when they stand on their own?  What will your child believe when he’s 15?

Who Am I, And What Am I Doing Here?, by Apologia, gives you foundational truths to teach your children.  You’ll know what they believe, and they’ll know why they believe it.

Written for ages 6-14; “based on the Biblical Christian worldview, which affirms that truth is absolute and knowable through the revelation of God.  It affirms that knowledge of God is the beginning of wisdom and the key to understanding the world around us.”  $39.

Much To Do About Spelling

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I think I’ve told you, a couple of times, how much I love to read.  I’ve shared with you my love of language, wanting to learn Spanish and Latin.  I’ve always enjoyed writing, even diagramming sentences.  I like the rhythm of words.  The cadence of their syllables.  I think spelling bees are wonderful!

Some of my children share my love of reading.  Some of them write and develop story lines, fleshing out characters.  They’ll watch The National Spelling Bee with me, amazed at the difficulty of some of the words given, but none of them actually enjoy spelling.   I think it’s because they lack confidence in their ability to spell words correctly.  They recognize a word when reading it, but cannot always spell it when using it in their writing.  They know the meaning of a word, and can use it properly in a sentence, but inevitably will forget how to spell it.  I’ll admit, this is no small frustration for me.  We own more than one dictionary and have utilized spell check on the PC, even when something is being written by hand.  Grumblings can sometimes be heard when one is sent to heft the cumbersome, intimidating dictionary off the shelf, to “find the word yourself,” and the computer is not always accessible; so, they often ask me how to spell a word.  Even then, the usual response is, “spell the word, the way you think it is spelled, and then ask me if it’s correct.”

We’ve done vocabulary lists and spelling words for the week.  Using rote and repetition.  And, it’s a good thing I like words as much as I do, because we’ve been playing word games, like Scrabble and Boggle, for 30 years!  Educational fun and reinforcement, you know.  Yet, spellings escape them.

Last year, as a TOS Homeschool Review Crew Member, I reviewed what-is-now my favorite Reading Tool.   See-N-Read was my introduction to CadenaSmith Enterprises, and it is “a truly effective intervention for reading.”  This year, See-N-Spell arrived at my house, with much anticipation!  It is a 40 page Spelling and Vocabulary Quick Reference Guide.

In alphabetical order, you’ll find more than 300 most commonly used vocabulary words and commonly misspelled words.  Basically, if you know the first letter or couple of letters in a word, you can find it here, correctly spelled.  Homophones (here – hear, there – their) are listed too (to – two), with a brief definition, so it’s easy to choose the correct one.  Although, it is printed on heavy duty, semi-gloss paper, for repeated use, it is not a heavy, 2 inch thick, hard bound book.  It’s an unassuming, easy-to-use booklet, that prompts my children to use it regularly.   Dr. Sylvia Smith, the author, thought to include a section where you can write your own special interest words, words you might use fairly often, but waffle on when it comes time to spell.  Guaranteed, or is it gauranteed?  Sometimes, after we study it for several seconds it becomes even more muddled.  Easier just to look it up in the See-N-Spell and move on in your creative or constructive writing.

“Writers typically possess a larger everyday spoken (social) language vocabulary than written academic language vocabulary.”  The See-N-Spell – Spelling and Vocabulary Quick Reference Guide facilitates getting that larger vocabulary transferred easily to the written page.  “The need for correct spelling and adequate vocabulary is not limited to English Literature and Composition courses…they are essential components of success in Social Studies, Science, and Math, as well as in the world of business.”

It’s our new go-to spelling guide!  At $9.99 I think it’s a worthwhile investment, plus, I nearly forgot to tell you, you receive my favorite, document sized See-N-Read Reading Tool FREE,  with each See-N-Spell booklet you order!   Please, follow the links I’ve included in this post and visit their website for more information.

The Heavens Declare!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Covering Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology and Earth Science, has left little time to really get into Astronomy – the scientific study of the individual celestial bodies and of the universe as a whole.  I know there’s a Biblical purpose for which the Sun, Moon and Stars were created, “…to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years.” Genesis 1:14

In Junior High School I did an illustrated report on constellations.  I took over the huge bulletin board in the back of the classroom, used thumb tacks and white string, on a black background, and mapped the stars in our night sky.  My report briefly touched on names, history and origin.  I’ve enjoyed the Moon and Stars countless times since then, but I have not counted their worth.

Psalm 19:1-2 says, “The Heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays His handiwork.  Day after day it speaks out; night after night it reveals His greatness.”  Based on this verse alone, there is so much more than warmth from the Sun, and pretty lights in the sky at night.  I want my children to be able to recognize God’s handiwork, and intelligently acknowledge His greatness.  We need to learn how to observe the sky.

“It is said that every home in early America owned a (Holy) Bible, a copy of [John Bunyan's] Pilgrim’s Progress, and the current annual astronomical almanack,” writes Jay Ryan, author of The Classical Astronomy.

In his Celestial Almanack, February, 2012, Vol. 1, Number 2  you’ll find:

an Astronomical Calendar

Signs of the Seasons

* The Sun’s Declination

Seasonal Skies – Evening

*The Great Constellation Orion

*The N, E, and W Horizons

Dance of the Planets

*Jupiter and Venus Approach

*The Motion of Jupiter and Venus

*Superior Planets – Mars, Saturn

We love Jay’s style of teaching!

Blessings,

Penny

Good Education

Posted by: | Comments (2)

I want to give my children the opportunity of a good education.  After feeding them and clothing them, sometimes, the cost is greater than my budget.

This isn’t the case with KinderBach.

KinderBach provides a solid music foundation for the children while, at the same time, overlapping and enhancing basic math and language skills.”  Designed for beginners, ages 3-7.  It is good education.

Karri Gregor is the fun, energetic author, illustrator and educator of KinderBach.  She uses memorable piano pals, Frisco, Dodi, and friends, to teach note reading, rhythm, singing, composition, and more, reinforcing the value of each lesson with coloring pages, worksheets, and games.

Piano for young children. The lessons are child-friendly, quick and easy!  More than 240, 10 minute lessons, achieving 6 levels.  DVD/CD packages starting at $40.45 +s/h or an instantly accessible online subscription for $95.88 per year.  That makes it good education within budget!  That’s just $7.99 per month or less than 30 cents a day for a music tutor, no scheduling conflicts and no gas money.  I didn’t even factor in the 30% off  you can get, until February 2013, when you use coupon code TOScrew2012.

I first discovered KinderBach last year, and since then there have been some exciting changes.  You can still use the program on your computer, even streaming to your TV, but now, you can also use it with iPad, Android Tablet, Nook, or Kindle Fire!

They still have their 30 Day Money Back Guarantee, plus all DVD’s & CD’s have a lifetime replacement if damaged for any reason.  There’s really no risk because KinderBach also offers a two week free trial, before you pay for anything.

Take a few minutes to follow the links I’ve posted here, to the KinderBach website.  It’s simple to navigate and full of great information!

Maestro Classics

Posted by: | Comments (0)

We love music.  I encourage my children to develop an appreciation for the art, beauty, and talent in every genre.  I’ll admit, it’s a little harder to find in some, more than others, but it is possible.

In December, I had the opportunity to take my children to hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.  The youngest, especially, were amazed to hear and see the instruments at the same time.  I loved watching them, as they heard a new sound, searching to find the instrument it was coming from.  It was a wonderful experience.

“Listening to symphonic music allows a child to listen to the sounds that various instruments make and then make an informed decision on which instrument they might like to try playing.”  It’s true.  My child could envision herself playing the flute.  Actually, she mimicked playing it throughout the entire concert.  I don’t know if she had even seen a flute before then.

Maestro Classics is classical music for kids.  It is geared for children ages 6 – 12.  The music is performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

They have 9 productions available:

Peter and the Wolf

The Soldier’s Tale

The Story of Swan Lake

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

My Name is Handel: The Story of Water Music

The Tortoise and the Hare

Casey at the Bat

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Juanita the Spanish Lobster

Each CD is $16.98 or purchase a MP3 download for $9.98.  Nearly an hour of music, by brilliant composers, narration and background information.

It’s a Wrap!

Posted by: | Comments (2)

At our house, a school day might begin something like this…

A Younger Child:  “Hey, Momma, did you know that all of the Anderson’s have the flu?”

ME:  “I didn’t.  When you talk to Katie, find out if they need anything.”

Younger Child:  “Okay.”

An Older Sibling:  “Did you know that our great-great-grandmother died from the flu?  Nana was born in 1912, so she was only six when her mom and her little brother died in 1918.”

ME:  “The worst plague in America was the Influenza Epidemic of 1918.  More people died from the flu in that year than died in all of World War I.”

Younger Child:  “She was younger than me.”

ME:  “She was.  Then, her dad died when she was just 12.  She was your sister’s ages living through The Great Depression.”

Older Child:  “1929-1939 or 41, or something?”

Younger Child:  “What’s The Depression?”

ME:  “I’ll tell you what, after breakfast, I’ll show you some pictures of kids during The Great Depression.  I’ve got a book, someplace.  I’ll find it.  It’s called Children of the Great Depression.  Just the photographs will give you a good idea of what The Great Depression was, but we’ll talk about it, too.”

At this point, my brain is charging ahead with plans for today and tomorrow, and beyond.

THINKING:  “I’ll make breakfast a little hardier than I initially planned, so I can just give them bread & water for lunch.  Seriously, hunger was real during The Depression.  Maybe we’ll follow a bare-bones-potato-soup recipe for dinner and eat by the light of an oil lamp.”

I know my older ones read The Great Depression, America 1929-1941, by Robert S. McElvaine, but the mids haven’t, yet.

THINKING:  “I’ll pull that out and we can read excerpts from it, to everyone, but they can work on reading the whole thing, themselves, over the next week.  They’ll definitely need to start a vocabulary/spelling list.  I have some Penmanship/Copywork pages I can add for the younger ones and an essay assignment for the oldest.”

DANCING INSIDE MY HEAD:  I can download an instant e-Book from Zeezok Publishing!  One of their Z-Guides to the Movies for the Depression era.  I’m pretty sure they have one for Kit Kittredge, and since we already own the movie we could actually work on it this week.  They love that movie, but with the Z-Guide they’ll see it in a whole new light.”

Books, movies, the internet.  The library, Netflix, museums.  I use them all.  Anything and everything that I can get my hands on and afford, that will stimulate my children’s desire to learn and successfully educate them.

Zeezok Publishing has been providing materials for the homeschooling community since 1993.  They’ve published government and history texts, and sixteen classic biographies on the great composers.  In 2010 they introduced us to Z-Guides to the Movies.

Each Z-Guide is developed for a specific movie.  We’ve found many of the movies at our local library; most are available for rent on Netflix, Zeezok sells a few and some you may already own.  There are more than 30 Z-Guides available, now, and another 25 are due to be released in the spring.

$12.99 gives you access to an instant e-Book download, of your choice, or you can have a CD shipped.  Many topics and time-periods are covered -

 Ancient Civilizations

Ancient Egypt

Ancient Greece

Ancient Rome

Medieval Europe

16th, 17th, 18th & 19th Century Europe

American and French Revolution

Westward Expansion

War Between the States

The Roaring Twenties and The Great Depression

World Wars 1 & 2 and Post-WW2

and the Vietnam War

You’ll get a topic, time-period overview; a movie synopsis, giving you an understanding of the relationship between characters, events and situations.  A list of review questions to be discussed and answered as the movie is being watched, and additional activities prompting research and writing.  My favorite section of every Z-Guide is the Filmaker’s Art and Dramatic License Activity.  I do not have the ready knowledge that I find in this section.  Even as my children are learning, so am I.

“The Filmmaker’s Art activity helps the student recognize the tools being used to influence the viewer.”  Without the Z-Guide, I don’t always discern these as clearly.  “The various guides discuss how filming techniques, music, lighting, humor, character development, irony, foreshadowing, and even character names are used by the director and producer to influence the viewer to get their agenda across.”  Z-Guides to the Movies has changed the way we see a movie and that’s their goal.  They “want the student to be able to discern not only the agenda of the movie, but also how they are being influenced by it. The goal is that when the student goes to the theatre and watches a movie, he walks out not thinking it was an entertaining movie, but understanding the bigger message behind each film.”

My children are enhancing their critical thinking skills.  Besides movies, they now look at reading material differently, and also examine the influence and impact they may have on others with what they personally write or visually and musically produce.

I think  Z-Guides are impressively thorough.  In 2011, I used one with The Hiding PlaceClick the link to read my review.

Recently, we did, indeed, use the Z-Guide for Kit Kittredge.  Written for elementary and middle school, it was easily adaptable to include our K5 through high school and adult.

Topics and Activities covered ~

The Great Depression

Journalism

Prejudice

Family Unity

and Hobo Life

It was a perfect wrap to an interesting study!

The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Review Crew has had the opportunity to review several different Z-GuidesClick on the banner below to read what my crew mates thought of each one.

A Little Fickly

Posted by: | Comments (1)

When I was just a few years married, about a year after my husband and I bought our first house, and just weeks after we sold most of our possessions, had put everything else into storage, and rented out said house, so we could buy an itty-bitty travel trailer, pack up our children and hit the road, my younger, unmarried, brilliant, well-educated brother dared to call me fickle.  I cried.  I was so hurt that he would think that of me.  Where did it even come from?

I was doing my best to make carefully thought out, prayed about, researched and counseled choices and decisions for my family.  What I saw as flexible, open and, willing to follow the leading of The Spirit, my brother perceived as irresolute, not constant and likely to change frequently, suddenly or unexpectedly.  Not a favorable light.  It was incomprehensible to me that he could think that lowly of me!

It was such a big deal to me, and yet, it was only a short time, a little maturity and, a dab of life experience that had him clearly understanding what I hadn’t been able to explain, as I had tearfully defended my battered honor.  Thinking back to 20 years ago, to the heart-drama of it, makes me smile wistfully.  It is amazing, the mole hills that we can make into mountains!  Such a simple issue, especially, in light of the vein of truth I’ve discovered in my brother’s observation.

I am fixed and steadfast in my commitment to homeschooling my children, but I am of a changeable mind; often fickle, as I seek out the best curriculum for each of them.  I might be sure I’ve found the best math program available, and six months later be able to honestly tell you I’ve discovered a new best.  Each child is different, time and circumstances change, and it seems there is a product being developed and released nearly every day.  I am firm in my purpose, but might appear fickly in my opinion of curriculum choice.  I’m okay with that!  I’m looking for exceptional and every time I find it- I’m sharing it with you.

Recently, I’ve found the best  R.E.A.L. Homeschool Spanish program!  Developed by Dr. Karyn Williamson-Coria, a mother, with her doctorate, on a quest to find the best foreign language study for her children.  This is “a program that enables parents to learn along with their child, a program that is easy to use and enables a home educator to help children use the language.”

“Most programs work on reading, writing, listening and pronunciation,” but have little interaction with others; rarely using the language.  “This program is built upon a conversational Spanish foundation” that promotes interaction and immersing the entire family in the language learning journey.  I found it easy to integrate into our already scheduled programming.  Notice the initialism ~

R.E.A.L.

Relax.  Enjoy.  Aspire.  Learn.

The goal, of learning Spanish and teaching it to my children, seems attainable, with R.E.A.L. Homeschool Spanish.  The education is apparent, but surprisingly, I also found encouragement and inspiration.

The World’s Greatest Stories

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I believe in God.  I believe He actually came to earth, in the flesh as Jesus Christ, because He loved each of us so much.  I believe in The Bible, as the inspired, inerrant Word of God.  I believe it is the world’s greatest book and the more we read it and hear it, the better chance we have of applying it to our daily life.

The World’s Greatest Stories are quoted directly, word for word, from The Bible, and narrated by master storyteller, George W. Sarris.  These stories are true to the words of Scripture and they are dynamically, vocally illustrated by Mr. Sarris.  He captivates your attention, while The Word of God is being spoken into your Spirit!

Currently, there are six volumes available, in CD format:

  1. The Prophets
  2. The Life of Christ
  3. Beginnings
  4. Joshua and Esther
  5. Joseph and His Brothers
  6. Defeating Giants

23 stories covered in approximately 6 hours of audio!  Each CD is $7.95, and is available in the King James Version (KJV) and the New International Version (NIV) of The Bible.  The investment is minimal, especially in light of the eternal value.
